The Philadelphia 76ers, colloquially known as the Sixers, are an American professional basketball team based in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The 76ers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Atlantic Division and play at the Wells Fargo Center located in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex. Founded in 1946 and originally known as the Syracuse Nationals, they are one of the oldest franchises in the NBA and one of only eight (out of 23) to survive the league’s first decade. The franchise were an instant success in the NBA, winning the division title in 1950 and 1952. They clinched the NBA Championship first time in 1955 and team’s name started rising up. In 1960s and 1970s, The 76ers got multiple achievements, including three consecutive division titles from 1966 to 1968, as well as a 1967 NBA championship. The team started decade 80s with three consecutive NBA Finals apperances, in 1981, 1982 and 1983 when they successed to NBA championship. However, in following years, the 76ers entered a rebuilding period. It was not until 2001 when they achieved finals apperance once again and were defeated. So far the franchise has not won any more championships. The 76ers have had a prominent history, with many Hall of Fame players having played for the organization, including Chet Walker, Billy Cunningham, Maurice Cheeks, Bobby Jones, Charles Barkley and George McGinnis. Chamberlain, Erving, Malone and Iverson have been named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player six times while playing for the 76ers.
